10 Thanksgiving Books for Elementary-Aged Kids
From the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to cozy family gatherings, these Thanksgiving picture books are worth pulling off the shelf every November.
Thanksgiving books don't always get the attention they deserve. Halloween has its spooky stories, Christmas has approximately a million books, and Thanksgiving somehow gets squeezed between the two.
But I love a good Thanksgiving book collection, especially one that mixes a little history with humor, beautiful illustrations, and stories about family and gratitude.
I'm particularly drawn to children's books that sneak in some actual historical facts. If we're going to read about Thanksgiving traditions, why not learn something about how they started? And, of course, there's always room for a few wonderfully nostalgic stories that have absolutely nothing to do with historical accuracy.
These ten Thanksgiving books are favorites for family reading, elementary classrooms, and building a seasonal book collection you'll enjoy year after year.
1. Thanksgiving in the Woods by Phyllis Alsdurf
Best for: Preschool through elementary | Family traditions and gratitude
Inspired by a real family's Thanksgiving celebration, Thanksgiving in the Woods follows a community gathering in the forest for food, music, and fellowship. The beautiful illustrations capture everything I love about fall: crisp air, colorful leaves, and being together.
It's a lovely reminder that Thanksgiving traditions don't have to be elaborate to be memorable.

2. Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet
Best for: Elementary ages | Thanksgiving history and creativity
One of my favorite ways to incorporate history into holiday reading! Balloons Over Broadway tells the true story of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer whose creativity helped shape the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons. The illustrations are fantastic, and children get a little history, engineering, and artistic inspiration along the way.
3. Thank You, Sarah by Laurie Halse Anderson
Best for: Elementary ages | American history and perseverance
Did you know Sarah Josepha Hale spent decades advocating for Thanksgiving to become a national holiday? Thank You, Sarah introduces children to the determined woman whose campaign helped persuade Abraham Lincoln to establish a national Thanksgiving observance in 1863.
It's funny, informative, and a perfect example of why I love including historical picture books in our seasonal reading.
4. Cranberry Thanksgiving by Wende and Harry Devlin
Best for: Early elementary | A nostalgic Thanksgiving classic
Maggie and Grandmother are preparing their Thanksgiving feast in Cranberryport, but an unexpected guest threatens to complicate the celebration. My family loves celebrating the seasons and holidays with the crew from Cranberryport!
Bonus: There's a cranberry bread recipe to try afterward!
5. Time for Cranberries by Lisl H. Detlefsen
Best for: Preschool through elementary | Farming and food traditions
Ever wondered how cranberries make it from the bog to your Thanksgiving table?Time for Cranberries follows a family through the cranberry harvest, introducing children to the work behind one of Thanksgiving's most recognizable foods.
I love books that teach children something about the world without feeling like a textbook! I sometimes lay these books out on tables in my middle school classroom for them to read in homeroom. The picture books are low bar and they learn something while enjoying a festive story!
6. Sharing the Bread by Pat Zietlow Miller
Best for: Preschool through early elementary | Family and togetherness
Sharing the Bread captures a family preparing Thanksgiving dinner together, from setting the table to baking and cooking. The rhythmic text makes it a wonderful read-aloud, while the illustrations celebrate the little jobs and shared moments that make holiday gatherings special. It's especially sweet for younger children who are eager to help in the kitchen.
7. Miss Suzy by Miriam Young
Best for: Preschool through elementary | A cozy woodland classic
Technically, Miss Suzy isn't a Thanksgiving book, but I think it belongs in a fall book collection.
This charming story follows a little gray squirrel whose peaceful home is disrupted by a group of mischievous red squirrels. With the help of some toy soldiers, she finds her way back home. The woodland setting and nostalgic illustrations make it perfect for a cozy November afternoon.
8. Milly and the Macy's Parade by Shana Corey
Best for: Elementary ages | Thanksgiving traditions and history
Set in 1920s New York City, Milly and the Macy's Parade tells the story of a young immigrant girl whose idea helps inspire a holiday celebration for Macy's employees. Inspired by the parade's early history, this book introduces children to the immigrant communities and traditions that helped shape an American Thanksgiving favorite. Pair it with Balloons Over Broadway for a fun look at how the parade evolved.

9. Thanksgiving at the Tappletons' by Eileen Spinelli
Best for: Preschool through elementary | Thanksgiving humor
Everything that can go wrong with the Tappletons' Thanksgiving dinner does. The turkey disappears, the pies don't work out, and the family meal is looking increasingly hopeless. But the Tappletons discover that Thanksgiving isn't really about having the perfect dinner. It's a funny, relatable read-aloud for any family that's ever experienced a holiday cooking disaster. Which is probably every family.

10. A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve Bunting
Best for: Preschool through early elementary | A funny Thanksgiving classic
I have a particular soft spot for Eve Bunting's books. She has such a wonderful ability to tell stories that are accessible to children while still being clever, warm, and memorable. In A Turkey for Thanksgiving, Mrs. Moose wants a turkey at her Thanksgiving dinner, so Mr. Moose sets out to find one. The turkey, understandably, has some concerns about the invitation.
It's a delightful story with a sweet ending and exactly the kind of humor that makes a picture book worth reading again.

Giving November Its Moment
Does anyone else feel like Christmas starts the minute the Halloween decorations come down? One day we're handing out candy, and the next we're surrounded by Christmas trees, holiday shopping lists, and Mariah Carey. Somewhere along the way, November seems to have become little more than a countdown to December.
And that's a shame, because November has its own kind of magic. There's something wonderful about the last colorful leaves, crisp afternoons, family recipes, and the anticipation of gathering around a Thanksgiving table.
That's one reason I love having a few Thanksgiving books on our shelves. They give us a reason to appreciate the season we're actually in. Whether it's learning about the history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, discovering how cranberries are harvested, or laughing through a disastrous fictional Thanksgiving dinner, these stories remind us that November deserves a little attention of its own.
Christmas will be here soon enough. In the meantime, there's something to be said for slowing down, enjoying the final weeks of fall, and letting Thanksgiving have its moment before the holiday whirlwind begins.
