14 Favorite Christmas Books for Kids and Families: Stories Worth Reading Every Year
From nostalgic Christmas classics to magical adventures, these are the holiday books worth making room for on your bookshelf.
There are two kinds of Christmas books: the ones you read once and the ones you find yourself digging out of storage every December because Christmas simply wouldn't feel the same without them.
I'm firmly in favor of the second kind.
Over the years, we've collected Christmas books that range from laugh-out-loud picture books to beautifully illustrated stories and longer novels perfect for winter break. Some are funny, some are sentimental, and a few might leave you pretending you just have something in your eye.
Whether you're looking for Christmas read-alouds for elementary students, holiday books for older kids, or a meaningful gift to kick off a holiday break, these 14 favorites deserve a spot in your holiday rotation.
1. The Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snitcher
Best for: Preschool and early elementary | A funny Christmas read-aloud
This is a long time favorite in our house! If Christmas baking is part of your family's holiday traditions, The Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snitcher is a delightful addition to your bookshelf.
Someone is stealing the sprinkles, and without them, the town's beloved Christmas cookies just aren't the same. It's a playful, rhyming holiday mystery filled with the kind of silliness young children love.
This is a particularly fun book to read before decorating Christmas cookies. Just keep an eye on the sprinkles.

2. Red and Lulu by Matt Tavares
Best for: Elementary ages and families | A beautiful, heartfelt Christmas story
Red and Lulu tells the story of two cardinals who make their home in a magnificent evergreen tree. When the tree is unexpectedly cut down and transported to New York City, the birds are separated, and Red sets off to find Lulu.
What follows is a touching story of love, perseverance, and reunion, set against the magic of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story has enough emotional depth to make it just as meaningful for adults as it is for children.
3. Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkien
Best for: Middle School through adults | A literary Christmas keepsake
If your family loves The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, this book is a wonderful glimpse into another side of Tolkien's imagination.
For years, Tolkien wrote and illustrated elaborate letters from Father Christmas to his children, complete with adventures at the North Pole, mischievous goblins, and the frequently troublesome North Polar Bear. Letters from Father Christmas collects these wonderfully imaginative letters and drawings into a book that feels like a holiday treasure.
It's especially lovely to read a few letters each December rather than rushing through the entire collection.

4. The Bears' Christmas by Stan and Jan Berenstain
Best for: Preschool through early elementary | A nostalgic Christmas classic
There is something wonderfully comforting about the older Berenstain Bears books, and The Bears' Christmas is no exception.
Papa Bear attempts to teach Small Bear some winter sports, but his confidence is considerably greater than his ability. Naturally, things don't go quite as planned. The illustrations, humor, and familiar family dynamics make this an especially fun Christmas read-aloud.
5. Cranberry Christmas by Wende and Harry Devlin
Best for: Early elementary | An old-fashioned Christmas story
If you love the charm of classic children's books, Cranberry Christmas belongs on your list.
Set in Cranberryport, the story follows Maggie, Mr. Whiskers, and their neighbors through a Christmas adventure involving friendship, generosity, and a little holiday trouble. The vintage illustrations and small-town setting make it feel like stepping into a simpler Christmas season.
This is the sort of book that pairs perfectly with hot chocolate, a blanket, and absolutely nowhere you need to be.
6. The Nutcracker: The Story Orchestra
**Best for: Preschool through elementary | An interactive Christmas book
If you've ever wanted to introduce your children to The Nutcracker ballet without expecting them to sit through a full performance, this book is a fantastic place to start.
The Nutcracker from the Story Orchestra series retells the familiar Christmas story with beautiful illustrations and buttons that play excerpts from Tchaikovsky's music. Children can follow Clara's adventure while hearing the music that makes the ballet so memorable.
It's a wonderful combination of storytelling, art, and classical music, and it makes a particularly lovely Christmas gift.

7. The Angel of Bastogne
Best for: Older middle school and High School - A meaningful historical Christmas story
Not every Christmas book needs Santa, reindeer, or a perfectly decorated tree.
The Angel of Bastogne brings readers into the setting of World War II and the Battle of the Bulge, highlighting compassion and humanity during an extraordinarily difficult time. For families who enjoy history, this is an opportunity to connect Christmas reading with conversations about courage, sacrifice, and kindness.
It's an especially thoughtful choice for older children who are ready for a more serious holiday story. My parents gave me this book when I was in high school and it has really stuck with me over the years.
8. Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree by Robert Barry
Best for: Preschool through elementary | A charming Christmas read-aloud
Mr. Willowby has a problem: his Christmas tree is just a little too tall.
When he trims the top, that discarded piece finds a new home, where it turns out to be a little too tall again. And so begins a delightful chain of Christmas trees, each bringing joy to someone new.
The rhythmic text and whimsical illustrations make this a wonderful read-aloud for younger children. It's also a sweet reminder that something small can bring an enormous amount of happiness.

9. The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street by Karina Yan Glaser
Best for: Upper elementary and middle school | A cozy Christmas chapter book
For children who have moved beyond picture books but still love a good holiday story, The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street is a wonderful choice.
Five siblings living in Harlem discover that their landlord doesn't intend to renew their family's lease. With Christmas approaching, they hatch a plan to change his mind and save their beloved home. The book is full of sibling chaos, neighborhood friendships, humor, and heart.
It's a great Christmas break read for kids who enjoy family-centered stories, and the characters are memorable enough that readers may want to continue with the rest of the series. Last year, we listened to this audiobook on our drive to school and home each day from Thanksgiving until Christmas Break. It holds a special place in my memories :)

11. A Cup of Christmas Tea by Tom Hegg
Best for: Older children, teens, and adults | A sentimental Christmas favorite
Some Christmas stories become more meaningful as you get older, and A Cup of Christmas Tea is one of them. Growing up, this book was such a favorite of my grandmother's that she collected the whole set of "A Cup of Christmas Tea" items. I now have the set and the items are some of my favorite and most special holiday decorations.
Told in verse, this short story follows a man who reluctantly visits an elderly relative during the busy Christmas season, only to discover that the visit means far more than he expected.
It's a quiet, moving reminder that the greatest gifts we give often have nothing to do with what comes wrapped under the tree.
This is a beautiful book to share with older children or to give as a thoughtful holiday gift to a grandparent.
12. The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey by Susan Wojciechowski
Best for: Elementary ages and families | A moving Christmas classic
Jonathan Toomey is a lonely, grieving woodcarver whose life begins to change when a widow and her young son ask him to carve a Christmas nativity set. As the boy visits to watch the carving, a gentle friendship develops, bringing warmth back into a life marked by loss.
The illustrations are stunning, and the story explores grief, kindness, hope, and the healing power of human connection. Our elderly neighbor gave this to us one year and I found myself sitting by the tree with tears running down my cheeks. Don't say I didn't warn you!
It's a beautiful Christmas book with a message that stays with you long after the decorations come down.

J.K. Rowling brings her imaginative storytelling to a Christmas adventure about a boy named Jack and his beloved stuffed pig. When the pig is lost, Jack embarks on an extraordinary journey into the Land of the Lost, where forgotten objects have lives of their own.
The story is imaginative, suspenseful, and surprisingly emotional, exploring love, loss, courage, and what makes something truly irreplaceable. It's a wonderful choice for confident elementary readers and middle schoolers who enjoy fantasy with plenty of heart.

If your child loves imaginative adventures, A Boy Called Christmas offers a fresh and entertaining take on the origins of Father Christmas. The story follows a young boy named Nikolas on a journey filled with elves, magical creatures, danger, and unexpected friendships.
The series combines humor, adventure, and touching moments while exploring hope, generosity, and the importance of believing in something good. These books are perfect for readers who want to spend more than one evening in a magical Christmas world.

Reading as a Tradition
You don't need an elaborate activity or a perfectly planned December calendar. Sometimes all it takes is pulling out the same beloved books each year, reading one before bed, or setting aside a quiet afternoon for a longer Christmas story. Every holiday and season has its own special set of books in our house. They're an important part of the ebb and flow of our year and we love the comfort of familiar stories when a new season arrives.
For younger children, I love the idea of wrapping a few Christmas books and letting them open one each weekend in December or receiving a book on Christmas Eve to read a little before bed. Older kids might enjoy choosing a holiday novel to read over winter break.
And if your family has a Thanksgiving Box tradition, a Christmas book is one of the easiest and most meaningful things to include. It gives children something festive to enjoy throughout the entire season rather than waiting until Christmas Day.
The best Christmas books aren't necessarily the newest or flashiest. They're the ones your children remember, request again, and eventually want to share with their own families.
Those are the books worth keeping.
